John Siegel (he/him/his) is the Coordinator of Information Literacy at the University of South Carolina Upstate (USC Upstate), an urban comprehensive university with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. In this role, he leads the research/library instruction program, including policies, assessment, and statistics. John also serves as liaison to Community Health, Exercise Science, Psychology, and Women’s and Gender Studies. Shortly after joining USC Upstate, he was appointed Affiliate Faculty for the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, which involves active participation in curriculum, marketing, and promotion.
John’s research interests include equity, diversity, and inclusion in academic and other libraries. John has written two articles on academic librarians’ ability to meet lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) information needs, which have appeared in “College & Research Libraries (C&RL)” and “Journal of the Medical Library Association.” He has also presented on LGBTQ+ services, including collection development, at a variety of national, regional, and local conferences, two of which were invited.
John serves on the library’s diversity council and has been active in the South Carolina Library Association’s LGBT Roundtable. In addition, he was selected as a trainer for the USC Upstate “Civil Treatment for Employees and Leaders” series, which focuses on equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.
John earned his MLS from the University of Maryland and Master of Education (MEd) in adult and professional learning from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His undergraduate degree is in social work from San Francisco State University.
