For years, Dr. Erum Shahzad (she/her/hers) has made concerted efforts to bridge cultural gaps, bring groups together, and show that similarities outnumber differences. Dr. Shahzad is proud to be an early pioneer of LISD’s cultural proficiency training to many campuses across the district and has received positive feedback from LISD staff after leading a simulated English Language Learners lesson in Hindi, one of Dr. Shahzad’s native languages.
This PD workshop allowed Dr. Shahzad to show teachers how challenging it can be for English Language Learners to not only learn rigorous content such as math, science, etc but to do so in a language that is not native to them. Students and teachers alike were very appreciative and reported having increased understanding for the unique challenges of English Language Learners as a result of Dr. Shahzad’s training.
